Tina Walters of Alexander, NY is a busy mom these days, but she is thrilled about losing the baby weight that she thought would be there forever. "When I found out I was pregnant with twins, the first thing my husband said was: "You're going to be as big as a house.' I was, too. During my pregnancy, I had a lot of issues with high blood pressure and was put on bed rest for the last 2 months. I was huge!" Tina says. After the babies were born, Tina weighed 195 pounds, which was about 45 pounds heavier than her pre-pregnancy weight.
"As a first time mom handling two babies, I didn't really have the time or energy to work out very much, and had to put my weight loss attempts on the back burner. A few months later, I realized that not only had I not lost anything, but I had put on another 10 pounds at the Holidays, I was so frustrated." Having heard horror stories from other women about not being able to lose baby weight made Tina all the more committed to get rid of it.
A friend recommended that she try a fat burner to help get her metabolism going. "After all, I wasn't eating all that terribly, or any different from before I had the twins. After doing some research online, I was wary of taking anything that either had Ephedra or said it was an Ephedra substitute. There just wasn't enough research and data for me. I tried Phenocerin, because most of its fat burning power comes from white and green tea and caffeine (given the sleep patterns I was getting was not wasted on me). Those were ingredients I could handle. I watched what I ate, used a common sense approach like no fried foods or sugary desserts and began exercising as much as the babies would allow me to.
Tina lost her baby weight plus more, shedding a total of 76 lbs in 7 months. "I feel and look so much better," she says.
What are some of the "common sense" methods that Tina applied?
Here are a few of the things that I have learned along the way:
Make snacks and meals ahead of time: "To avoid grabbing high calorie snacks out of sheer convenience, I make sure that there are healthy alternatives readily available and easy to grab." For Tina, this includes keeping cut fruit and vegetables on hand, as well as 100 calorie pack snacks, sugar-free gelatin, and low fat yogurts.
Maintain CONTROL over portions: "Don't feel compelled to finish something 'just because,' Tina advises. Pay attention to how you feel- you'll be surprised when you're actually content and then STOP EATING. Save the rest for another meal, take doggy bags home from restaurants, and portion out foods at home ahead of time. Also, read food labels to see what a portion size really is, you'll be surprised at how many (and therefore how many more calories and fat) you may have been consuming."
Make sure you have the time to devote to working out: "When I first started working out, I would exercise while the babies were napping. Now that they're a little older, I take an hour after dinner 3 nights a week and close myself in our spare room. This gives my husband time to play with them before bedtime, and me the ability to complete my workout without distractions. Make a schedule that works for you."
Walk whenever you can: "When it's nice out, I make sure that I am out for at least a short stroll every day, and a power walk on my non-workout nights. I use the treadmill on bad weather days."
